The New Forest is normally renowned for its 3000 or so ponies that happily roam over the 48,000 acres, but who could ignore the cute little baby donkeys and those gorgeous ears.
There are over 150 donkeys and mules exploring the numerous lanes, grazing the hedges and just generally hanging out around the local pubs, like packs of unruly teenagers.
There is nothing more entertaining and enjoyable then sipping a drink in the sun, watching the donkeys as they calmly stroll into the centre of the road and just stop. Ignoring the baffled drivers, they promptly fall asleep and ignore the complete pandemonium they cause. Or perhaps they are aware and it’s secretly their form of entertainment. Who knows.
It is thought that donkeys have been out roaming since the Victorian era, as part of the ‘Commoning Right’ to turn animals out onto the forest. Being hardy by nature they survive the whole year out in the forest.
All I know, is the Donkeys definitely make fantastic models with some extremely cute little baby donkeys.
